Better Late Than Never Season 2

William Shatner (born March 22, 1931 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada), a Canadian actor whose prolific production and self-critical sense of humor secured him a place in the pantheon of American pop culture. He was best known for playing Captain James T. Kirk in the sci-fi television series Star Trek (1966–1969) and in several Star Trek films.
Early life and career

Shatner was raised in Montreal. His father was a menswear manufacturer, and his mother taught elocution. She exhibited an early interest in acting, enrolled at age eight at a children’s acting school and then appeared in radio productions for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the Montreal Children’s Theatre. Despite his early success as a performer, he enrolled at McGill University and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in commerce.

Acting in student productions and serving as a CBC announcer during his time at McGill, Shatner retained his entertainment connections despite pursuing a more pragmatic studies course. Upon graduation he became the assistant manager of the Mountain Playhouse in Montreal. There he made his stage debut in a production of Tom Sawyer (1952). He moved to a similar position at the Canadian Repertory Theatre in Ottawa that fall. In 1954 he was recruited to join the newly formed Stratford Shakespeare Festival, led by legendary English director Tyrone Guthrie. Shatner spent the following years playing supporting roles before taking on major parts, in a variety of classical works. A production of Christopher Marlowe’s Tamburlaine the Great, in which he played Usumcasane, traveled to Broadway in 1956. Shatner remained in New York City, appearing in a variety of theater and television productions.

Shatner’s first major role in the film came in 1958, when he played Alexi (also spelled Alexey) Karamazov opposite Yul Brynner in an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. He then returned to Broadway for a two-year career in Suzie Wong’s World (1958–60), earning critical acclaim for his performance. He later played a U.S. Army captain. In the film Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), about the post-World War II trials of Nurnberg.

Star Trek and subsequent acting credits

Shatner worked constantly after that, mainly in supporting roles in film and television. He did not reach a wider announcement until he was cast as Captain James T. Kirk in writer-producer Gene Roddenberry’s futuristic new television adventure, Star Trek (1966-1969). Kirk ordered the USS Enterprise spacecraft on his journey “to seek new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” The short-lived series became a cult hit and spawned a full subculture of amateurs, known to some as Trekkies.
