The reality star’s biological father was barely in her life, so it was her mother and stepfather who raised Vudu and her 12 younger siblings. “Our contact with the outside world was very, very limited and very controlled,” she recalls. “I wasn’t allowed to have any friends. There was no television, no literature.”
“Although it’s been almost a decade since she ran away from home at the age of 19, “the wounds are still fresh, so it doesn’t feel like it’s been so long ago,” explained the tattoo apprentice. “It was basically a royal prison … It was very Children of the Corn.”
Vudu made the difficult decision to return to her childhood near Seattle after her stepfather sent versions of his Bible to IAM Compton. “I feel like he’s chasing me or something,” she told her colleagues.
“Is this the stuff you’ve been raised on?” asked Lemeir. “I’m afraid that there are people out there who really live off it.” KP added, “That’s something demonic.”
Vudu confessed that she could only escape through the music she heard behind her parents’ backs. Tattoos also symbolized a form of freedom for the model.
“I’ve seen other people with tattoos and looked at them like, ‘Wow, these people live their full authentic self. They express themselves for what they are.’ ”
In “Black Ink Crew Compton”, Vudu Dahl describes the abuse she suffered as a child.
In a clip from the season finale, Vudu becomes increasingly anxious as she gets closer to her stepfather’s house. “Oh God, it just looks so weird here,” she observes, as Nessie offers some support.
“I’m starting to have all these horrible flashbacks of being beaten, starving, being forced to do things I didn’t want to do,” Vudu says. “My heart beats out of my chest.”
At some point, the make-up worker threatens to jump out of the car and call an Uber to take her back to the airport. When they finally come home to their childhood, Nessie Vudu has to chase down the street. “I have nothing to say to them … God, I’m bad,” admits the desperate VH1 star.
In an earlier episode, Vudu revealed how tattoos ultimately made her heal. “Every time I sat in a chair and worked on it, it was like all the pain I experienced and only the anger that I banished from my body, but at the same time I could tell it a story,” she said.
We really hope that the brunette beauty gets the degree she deserves. The season finale of the Black Ink Crew Compton will air on October 16 at 10 p.m. ET on VH1.
