Stephen James Easterbrook was born on August 6, 1967. He is a British managing director who served as CEO of McDonald’s until he was voted out of office in November 2019 due to a relationship with an employee that violated company rules.
Easterbrook was born on 6 August 1967 in Watford, England. He grew up in Watford and attended Watford High School for Boys. He later attended St Chad’s College, Durham University, to study natural sciences. At university he played cricket with his fellow student Nasser Hussain, who later became England’s cricket captain.
After graduation, he trained as an accountant at Price Waterhouse. Easterbrook first worked at McDonald’s as a manager in London in 1993. In 2011, he became CEO of PizzaExpress and then CEO of Wagamama, two British casual-dining chains, before returning to McDonald’s in 2013.
After being Chief Brand Officer of McDonald’s and his former head in the UK and Northern Europe, he became CEO of the company on 1 March 2015, succeeding Don Thompson, who resigned on 28 January 2015.
In November 2019, McDonald’s’ board of directors voted to remove Easterbrook as CEO for violating the company’s personal conduct policies by entering into a relationship with an employee. He was replaced as CEO of Chris Kempczinski, who had been president of McDonald’s USA.
The fast-food giant’s board of directors voted Friday to fire Steve Easterbrook after investigating his consensual relationship with the unnamed employee, the Wall Street Journal reported. In a statement, the company said the CEO “violated company policies and demonstrated poor judgment that includes a recent consensual relationship with an employee.”
Managers are prohibited from having romantic relationships with employees under Burger Chain’s policy.
Easterbrook’s total compensation as CEO of McDonald’s has been estimated at USD 15.4 million. It has been reported that his salary is USD 1.3 million and that he has received stock options worth USD 9 million and an incentive salary of USD 4.6 million.
Easterbrook is divorced and has three children who visit McDonald’s two or three times a month. He lives in Illinois and is a football fan of Watford FC.
