Trump’s lawyers are expected to hold a masterclass in disinformation while opening arguments in Saturday’s impeachment trial

President Donald Trump’s lawyers will take center stage Saturday as they begin their opening arguments in his historic impeachment process.

Trump was indicted last month for abuse of power and obstruction in Congress. Both articles of impeachment relate to his efforts to force Ukraine to launch politically motivated investigations against former Vice President Joe Biden, a 2020 Democratic leader and Trump’s political rival, and the Democratic Party as a whole. .

In doing so, the president withheld 391 million euros in military aid vital to Ukraine, as well as a White House meeting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky desperately sought and has not yet gotten.

Starting at 10 a.m. ET, Trump’s defense team will display what they say is a preview of the “next attractions” as they argue that the allegations against him are not constitutionally valid and should be dismissed.

The opening arguments for Trump’s team come after three days of opening arguments by seven impeachment officials, lawmakers in the House of Representatives acting as prosecutors in Trump’s impeachment process. The group is led by Representative Adam Schiff of California, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, which handled most of the impeachment hearings against Trump last year.
