About

Leslie is actually the only brother of Durrell that Lawrence mentions in his memoirs of Corfu, Prospero’s Cell, and Margo mentions it several times in his own memory, considerably less famous, Whatever happened to Margo?

Born in 1918, Leslie was Durrell‘s second oldest brother. When the Durrell moved from India to England after their father‘s death, Leslie went to an English school but apparently was not happy there (nor his brothers). On Corfu, however, Leslie felt at home, drank with the local peasants and hunted the local game.

Leslie returned to England with her mother, Gerald, Margaret and the maid of the Corfiot family, Maria Kondos when World War II broke out. (Margaret, of course, returned soon to her home in Corfu.) The Durrells settled in Bournemouth and Leslie tried to enlist in the army, but was repelled for health reasons, which was a failure for him. Instead, he spent the war working in an RAF factory.

Shortly after the family returned to England, Leslie had a brief love affair with Corfiot’s friend and servant, Maria Kondos, who produced a son, Anthony. However, romance was short lived.

Leslie also had the artistic streak of Durrellhe was a painter. This is how Margo describes him in his memoirs, Whatever Happened to Margo?

Leslie, this chunky silhouette, Rabelaisienne, lavishes oils on canvas or sinks into the subtleties of guns, boats, beer and women

Margo refers to Leslie as having the hint of an entrepreneur, and he certainly triedhis hand several companies, but had bad luck. When he was a major and received the inheritance that his father had bequeathed to him, he used it to set up a boat, spending all his money on a fishing boat that sadly sank before his maiden voyage to Poole Harbour, according to Margo.

Leslie and Margo were close, with Margo recalling many of their childhood antics in her memoirs. Leslie was a generous brotherMargo also tells how he saved a puppy from his sleep and led him to live with Margo.

In 1952, Leslie married his longtime girlfriend, Doris Hall, whose family ran an offlicence in Bournemouth. Doris, To the big heart, to the big voice, laughing, was older than Leslie, and the relationship was happy. Shortly after the wedding, they left England to start a new life in Kenya, where they wanted to run a farm. Sadly, however, this case did not work and Leslie and Doris were forced to return to England in 1968.

Leslie worked in London as a concierge in an elegant Marble Arch hotel. In 1983, he died of a heart attack in a pub in Notting Hill. It is rather tragic that none of Leslie’s brothers and sisters attended his funeral.
