Caden McWilliams’ father was sentenced on Friday to 72 years in prison for the death of the 7-year-old boy, whose body was found specifically locked in a Denver storage unit.
Leland Pankey, 40, pleaded guilty in January to child abuse that resulted in the death and manipulation of a human body killed in Caden’s death. The sentence included 48 years on the charge of child abuse and 24 years for manipulation.
The sentence is the result of an investigation that began on December 17, 2018, when Leland Pankey’s wife, Elisha Pankey, reported that her husband had abused her. During the domestic violence call, police noticed Caden was missing.

Investigators found Caden’s body six days later, buried in a cement block inside a kennel in a rented storage unit in the name of Elisha Pankey.
Later, Elisha Pankey told police that her husband severely abused the child by beating him and starving him to death. He said that one July morning the couple found Caden dead in a kennel, where Leland Pankey sometimes makes the boy sleep.
Elisha Pankey pleaded guilty in August to a single count of child abuse that resulted in death in connection with the case. She hasn’t been sentenced.
