Who is Kai Torkelson? Capt. Kai Torkelson is The commander of Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Navy’s largest and oldest industrial facility located in Portsmouth, Virginia since June 2018. Torkelson had previously served as a submarine officer for 12 years. According to his official bio, he was one of the first five engineering duty officers to volunteer for an Operation Iraqi Freedom assignment. He had been in 14 of Iraq’s 18 provinces, where he rebuilt the country’s military bases alongside local officials. His had received several awards such as the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement Medals. However Navy announced on Monday that he has been removed from his job by Vice Adm. Bill Galinis, the head of Naval Sea Systems Command, who is said to have lost confidence in Torkelson’s ability to command. Torkelson is among the four Navy leader to be relieved of command in the last month due to a loss of confidence.
