Who is Barbara Lagoa? Barbara Lagoa (born November 2, 1967) is an American lawyer and jurist who serves as a U.S. Circuit Judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. Before becoming a federal judge, she was the first Hispanic woman to be appointed a Judge of the Florida Supreme Court. If appointed to the nation’s highest court by Trump and confirmed by the Senate, she would be the second Latino justice to serve. Current Judge Sonia Sotomayor became the first when she was appointed by former President Barack Obama. If nominated and confirmed, Lagoa would be the fifth woman to join the Supreme Court.

Trump nominated Lagoa for the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2019. It was confirmed by the Senate in a bipartisan vote, which could help ease her path to the court if she is selected again by the president.

After graduating from Columbia Law School, Lagoa worked as a pro bono lawyer for Elian Gonzalez’s family and later as a federal prosecutor. Lagoa then spent more than a decade as a judge on a Florida appeals court before being chosen by Governor Ron DeSantis to be on the state’s highest court. “It was the essence of what a judge should be,” DeSantis said when he appointed her.

Lagoa was born in Miami, Florida, on November 2, 1967, the daughter of parents who fled Cuba following the Revolution and Fidel Castro’s taking power. She grew up in the Cuban-American-majority city of Hialeah, Florida. Lagoa received a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1989 from Florida International University, where she graduated in English and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. He received his doctorate in law from Columbia Law School in 1992. while working at Columbia, she was Associate Editor of the Columbia Law Review.

In 2000, Lagoa was one of a dozen mostly pro bono lawyers representing the Miami family of Elion Gonzalez. In 2003, she became assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, working in the civil, serious crimes and appeals sections.

Lagoa was appointed to the Third District Court of Appeals by Governor Jeb Bush in June 2006 and became Chief Judge on January 1, 2019. [9] On January 9, 2019, she was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court by Governor Ron DeSantis. She resigned when she was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.

On September 12, 2019, President Trump announced his intention to nominate Lagoa to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. On 15 October 2019, his nomination was sent to the Senate. President Trump nominated Lagoa for the seat vacated by Judge Stanley Marcus. A hearing on his appointment to the Senate Judiciary Committee was held on 16 October 2019. On 7 November 2019, his appointment was flagged off the committee by a vote of 18-4. On 19 November 2019, the Senate invoked the cloture on his nomination by a vote of 80-15, and the next day, on 20 November, he confirmed his nomination by a vote of 80-15. He received his judicial committee on 6 December 2019.

On September 9, 2020, President Trump included Lagoa on a list of potential Supreme Court nominees. After the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg on September 18, 2020, Lagoa was mentioned as one of the many favorites to fill the vacancy created by Judge Ginsburg’s death.
