Who is Barbara Fedida?
ABC News ceo Barbara Fedida was put on leave Saturday to give the company time to investigate reports that she repeatedly used insensitive, racist and offensive language while addressing staff.
Fedida is ABC’s Senior Vice President of Talent, Editorial Strategy and Business. ABC’s website states that its broad responsibilities include “developing and implementing ABC News’ strategic vision and planning for the next generation of on-air and off-air talent,” which also includes hiring and placing ABC anchors and correspondents worldwide.
Fedida reports to New York-based ABC News President James Goldston. Prior to ABC Fedida, she was vice president of talent and development at CBS, which she joined in 2006. She then returned to ABC News in 2011.
The internal ABC investigation was triggered in part by the Huffington Post, which recorded 34 complaints from current and former staff members against Fedida in an article published on June 13.
These complaints include a case during contentious contract negotiations where a staff member testified that he saw Fedida tell “Good Morning America” co-presenter Robin Roberts that the network was not asking Roberts to “choose cotton” in response to Roberts’ request for more money. when the contract was renewed.
Another complaint from an anonymous staff member said that speaking of former ABC black news anchor Kendis Gibson, “ABC” spends more on toilet paper than we would ever.”
The Huffington Post reports that Fedida “was the subject of more than a dozen human resources complaints and was the subject of a human resources investigation in 2016 that led ABC News to hire an executive coach for it, sources said.” The Huffington Post article went on to note that staff members familiar with the 2016 investigation were “stunned that it did not end in his dismissal.”
The report quotes a statement from Fedida provided by her lawyer, which reads: “Throughout my career, I have been a champion of increased diversity in network news. Building a news division where everyone can thrive has been the mission of my life. I am proud of my decades of hiring, supporting and promoting talented journalists of color. And, contrary to these heartbreaking and incredibly misleading statements about me, this history is well documented and undeniable. »
ABC News confirmed Fedida’s leave and said in an email statement: “There are deeply troubling allegations in this story that we need to investigate, and we have placed Barbara Fedida on administrative leave while we conduct a thorough and thorough investigation. These allegations do not represent the values and culture of ABC News, where we strive to ensure that everyone feels respected in a prosperous, diverse and inclusive workplace. »
On Saturday afternoon, the National Association of Black Journalists asked ABC to conduct a “transparent and external investigation” into the accusations, as well as a “thorough review” of the ABC News division under Fedida’s leadership. The organization also demands “immediate redress” for the wrong parties and that the CBA appoint an African-American to lead its diversity hiring efforts.
