Amy McGrath is an American former naval fighter and political candidate. She was the first female Marine to fly an F/A-18 in a combat mission. McGrath served in the Marine Corps for 20 years. During this time, she flew 89 combat missions to bomb al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

McGrath grew up in Edgewood, Kentucky, just outside Covington, the youngest of three children. She has an older sister and an older brother.
McGrath’s father, Donald McGrath, was a retired teacher who taught English in Cincinnati for 40 years. Her mother, Marianne McGrath, is a psychiatrist who was one of the first women to graduate from the University of Kentucky Medical School.
She attended St. Pius X Middle School, a Catholic school in Edgewood, Kentucky. In 1993, she graduated from Notre Dame Academy, Catholic All-Girls High School, where she played college football, basketball, and baseball, and was captain of the football team in her final year.
In her final year, McGrath received a discretionary decision from a superintendent for the United States Naval Academy. That same year, Congress repealed the Combat Exclusion Policy, which banned women from becoming fighter pilots.
In 1997, she graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in political science. During her time as a senior, McGrath was Midshipman Director of the Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference.
She received a law degree from Georgetown University in 2011. At the United States Naval Academy, McGrath was a member of the first women’s uni football team.
She was a three-year-old team writer and in 1994 she took on the Patriot League Sports Academic Honor Role for sports students.
In 2014, McGrath earned an MA in international and global security studies at Johns Hopkins University.
After graduating from the Naval Academy, McGrath served as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps at the age of 21.
McGrath graduated from flight school and began her career as a Weapons Systems Officer in the F/A-18 in 1999.
She had found out that she did not have a 20/20 vision, which meant that she could not become a pilot, but as a WSO she coordinated weapons, including air-to-air AMRAAM missiles and heat-seeking crosswinds.
When McGrath and his colleague Jaden Kim joined VMFA-121, they became the first female pilots to join the squadron.
During this time, McGrath was also part of the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101.
